Films to watch for the Very British Civil War 1938

Roleplaying, wargaming or other a few litle suggestions:

Went the Day Well – Rural villagers taking on British uniformed German commandos http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0035429/

The Eagle has Landed: Went the day well from a German persepctive – imagine Mcihael Caines boys are Royalist regualrs, the American’s an international Brigade works pretty well. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074452/

Stalingard: Okay it’s the Russian Front but the idea of fighting with too little equipment againist overwhelming odds fits too http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0376899/

Enemy at the Gates: Again Russian Front but for an insight in politics & propganda affecting combatants pretty good. May inspire some ‘Ferry ‘cross the Mersey’ scenes.http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0215750/

Ken Loach’s film of a Scouse Communist in the Spanish Civil War http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114671/ transfer the action to the Leeds-Liverpool Canal won’t go far wrong.

Classic spy/commando action – don’t expect to be as bulletprrof as Clint Eastwood  http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0065207/

It’s yanks and late war but for a mis-matched party can’t beat the Dirty Dozen http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0061578/

Stiff upper lip meets the Dirty Dozen in North Africa – transfer the action to the Cheshire plain and it would fit nicely http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0063443/ (espically the opening title sequence though youtube doesnt have a copy with the ‘punchline.’) http://www.jdmfilmreviews.com/play-dirty/

Eye in the Needle – German spy in wartime britain  http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082351/

  1. What about Ian McKellen’s adaptation of Richard III, which seems to have been a signifcant source of inspiration for the setting

    • Your quite, quite right – but I was looking for stuff which would hit the feel of the actual roleplaying game I’m running which is a spy/espionage/commado rather than the high politics of it al 😉

  2. Hi, Mark from Leeds here – long time no speak. Just saw your link to this and really like the idea. Have you seen ‘It happened here’ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0055024/), Germany succesfully invade Britain and this is set a few years later.
